What Is Reiki?

A Gentle Introduction to Energy Healing

Many people hear the word Reiki and aren’t quite sure what it means. Is it massage? Is it spiritual? Is it religious?
Let’s clear that up.

What Reiki Is:

Reiki is a gentle, hands-on (or hands-off) energy healing practice that supports the body’s natural ability to restore balance. The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words:

  • Rei – universal or life

  • Ki – vital energy (similar to chi or prana)

Reiki works with the subtle energy that flows through and around the body. When this energy becomes blocked or depleted; often due to stress, emotional overwhelm, trauma, or chronic tension... we can feel it physically, mentally, or emotionally.

Reiki was developed in Japan in the early 1900s by Mikao Usui and has since been practiced worldwide as a complementary wellness modality.

What Happens During a Reiki Session:

During a Reiki session, the client remains fully clothed and typically lies down or sits comfortably. The practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above specific areas of the body, allowing energy to flow where it is needed most.

Many people experience deep relaxation, a sense of calm or emotional release, sometimes warmth, tingling, or gentle sensations, as well as the feeling grounded, lighter, or clearer afterward.

Some feel a lot; others feel very little in the moment, but the nervous system is still responding.

How Reiki Works (Without the Mysticism):

Reiki is not about forcing change. It supports the body in shifting out of fight-or-flight and into a rest-and-restore state. When the nervous system relaxes muscles soften, breathing slows, and the body can focus on repair instead of survival.

Think of Reiki as an invitation, your system chooses how it responds.

What Reiki Is Not:

  • It is not a religion

  • It does not require belief

  • It does not replace medical or mental health care

Reiki works beautifully alongside traditional care, therapy, coaching, and other healing practices.

Why People Seek Reiki:

People often come to Reiki for:

  • Stress and burnout

  • Anxiety or emotional heaviness

  • Feeling disconnected from themselves

  • Support during transitions or healing journeys

  • Nervous system regulation and grounding

Reiki doesn’t “fix” you, because you aren’t broken. It helps you come back into balance.

What Is Distance Reiki?

Distance Reiki is a way of offering Reiki without physical touch or being in the same location. While this can sound confusing at first, it’s rooted in the understanding that energy, attention, and intention are not limited by physical space.

How Distance Reiki Works

Rather than working with the physical body directly, distance Reiki works with the energetic and nervous system field. The practitioner uses focused intention and specific Reiki techniques to connect with the client’s energy, allowing the same calming, balancing effect to take place.

A helpful way to think about it:

  • You don’t need to be next to someone to send a calming message or supportive presence

  • The nervous system responds to signals of safety, even without physical contact

Many clients report experiencing sensations similar to in-person sessions, including relaxation, emotional release, or a sense of grounding.

Why People Choose Distance Reiki

Distance Reiki can be especially supportive for:

  • Those who live far away or travel often

  • People who feel safer receiving care in their own space

  • Individuals who are sensitive to touch

  • Ongoing nervous system support between sessions

  • Times of stress, transition, or emotional processing

It offers flexibility while still providing meaningful support.

In-Person vs. Distance Reiki

Both forms work with the same intention: supporting balance and relaxation.

The difference is simply the method of connection, not the effectiveness.

Some people prefer in-person sessions for the physical presence. Others find distance Reiki surprisingly profound due to the comfort and safety of receiving it at home.
